Pikes Creek Dam: Dam Safety improvements with the use of pre-cast concrete labyrinth Fusegates®.

The main rehabilitation works at Pikes Creek dam involved stabilization of the dam embankment and increasing the spillway discharge capacity.

Prior to the completion of the project, the combined principal and auxiliary spillways were capable of passing only 23% of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). In order to pass the PMF without losing storage, 2.8 m high labyrinth Fusegates® were installed on a new broad crested weir. The first Fusegate® is set to tip after 23% of the PMF occurs, which corresponds to a several thousand years event.

The application of the Fusegate® System at Pikes Creek dam offered a reliable and cost effective solution; as it is a non-mechanical spillway control system and the rehabilitation works were kept within the footprint of the existing spillway.
