Upgrade of this dam is part of a contract with the Government of Gujarat for the upgrade of 4 dams, between July 1997 and the monsoon season in June 1998, involving a total of 250 fusegates.

Sonmati is equipped with 80 fusegates divided into 25 sets of three and one set of five. This arrangement provides a more significant free interval between wells for a higher discharge capacity over the fusegates.

The upgrade has made it possible to boost storage capacity as well as increase agricultural production by 760 tonnes/year.
