A private investor has benefited from favorable conditions and state aid for the development of small hydroelectric plants in Armenia to acquire and reconstruct the 1380 kW hydroelectric plant at Vorotna.
A major innovation of the Vorotna design includes the use of fusegates in order to increase the crest elevation by 1.50 m while reducing the height of the dam by 1 m, compared to the initial free overflow spillway project.
This means less concrete, for a total 20% project cost reduction.
