Smart Fusegate

This fusegate device based on a single triggering principle, still independent and without energy contribution, is not dragged by the flood: it tilts around an axis and is repositioned after the passage of the flood. The upstream water levels for the tilting and setting back in place are configurable at the time of the project, and can be adjusted later. Alone or in conjunction with Classic Fusegates®, it is the ultimate tool for optimising the management and safety of structures that lack of energy or operation 24/24.

A valve controlled by the upstream levels

The Smart Fusegate is comprised of a hinged panel placed across the flow. A compartment accommodates a counterweight in the lower part of the panel, which provides great stability to the valve when it is in the closed position. The reservoir water is stored up to the crest of the valve and is discharged by simply pouring over the crest in the event of moderate floods (Fig. 1).

During extreme flood situations, the reservoir level reaches the valve tilting point of the Smart Fusegate. Water then rushes into the tilting duct that opens into the casing of the valve. The latter, located in the upper part of the panel, is filled and acts as a destabilising overweight. The combined action of the thrust of the water and the additional overweight causes the panel to open (Fig. 2)

When the flood starts to recede, the reservoir level drops below the supply point of the second duct. The housing supply ceases and the drains gradually purge it. The counterweight brings the Smart Fusegate back into the closed position before the end of the flood event.

In this way, the Smart Fusegate manages to capture some of the flood and stores it in the reservoir.
