Dafnozonara dam is a small hydropower plant located on the Aheloos river in western Greece.
The operator, Terna Energy SA, designed the dam with a fusegates spillway.
Compared to the basic design with a free overflow spillway, the reservoir is raised by 3.30m thus boosting the power production potential of the facility by 8.50 MW (increasing the reservoir storage capacity by 58%).
The fusegates system was selected over other spillway control systems for its cost-effectiveness and its low maintenance requirements.
This project also confirms the potential of the fusegates system when applied to improved hydroelectric production.
